Lung Cancer Screening is coming to Southport and Formby
From January 27th, people aged 55–74 who have a recorded smoking history will start receiving invitations for a Lung Cancer Screening if they are registered with a GP in Southport and Formby.
The checks are run by Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, who contact eligible patients directly. Those classed as high risk will be offered a scan at use a mobile CT unit parked in a convenient local spot. For Southport and Formby, this will be at Dunes Splashworld from March 2nd.
Since the programme began in 2021, 706 lung cancers have been found across Cheshire and Merseyside and most were caught early, with over 80% diagnosed at Stage 1 or 2, where the cancer can be cured. The programme has also picked up other health issues, leading to 360 referrals for suspected non‑lung cancers.
Patients will first get a text from the NHS – and a letter if the text isn’t opened – inviting them to a telephone appointment. The call includes questions about general health, lung health and their smoking history. If someone is considered higher risk, they’ll be invited for a quick, low‑dose CT scan at the mobile unit.
